The History Problem, Politics of Memory and Heritage-Making, and the Road Toward Reconciliation in Asia: Perspectives from the Peripheries of Empires

Principle Investigator:Desmond Hok-Man SHAM, Postdoctoral Researcher, National Chiao Tung University

With specific reference to Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, I am exploring how World War II and the Cold War conflicts have been memorized, narrated, and represented, and how such “history problem” shapes and affects the current understanding of the past and present of local societies and inter-Asia relations. Besides, I am also exploring the possibilities of a more cosmopolitan form of war and conflicts commemoration beyond ethnic- or nation-based victimhood, heroes, and nationalism, and whether and how cultural heritage (including difficult heritage and museum) is able to bring dialogues, reconciliation, and thus more understanding and equal societies in the local, national, and the inter-Asia levels.
